21 Nov Partnering with a new generation of Fish Farmers
Over the past 12 months, The Appointed Group has been proud to serve as the retained talent advisor for the UK’s first large-scale land-based salmon farm project. During this time, we have completed several confidential Executive Search assignments and guided them in building their team requirements over the next four years.
After years of planning, all necessary consents have now been granted for the project, which will be located on former railway sidings in Grimsby, known as the seafood capital of the UK. Developed by AquaCultured Seafood Ltd, this facility will utilise a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to grow Atlantic salmon entirely in onshore tanks instead of sea cages, resulting in no environmental impact and complete control over the farming process. The farm will employ proven technology that is already producing 7-kilogram fish in various locations around the world.
The farm is expected to produce approximately 5 million kilograms of salmon each year. Its location in Grimsby’s seafood cluster will minimise “food miles” to nearly zero while supporting local processors. The design includes water treatment facilities, feed storage, an energy centre and ample roof space intended for solar panels.
The salmon produced at this facility will be free from sea lice, antibiotics, microplastics and chemicals and there will be no risk of escapees.
Construction is anticipated to last around 18 months, with an aim for completion in 2027. This Grimsby farm represents a significant turning point in UK aquaculture, demonstrating that large-scale land-based salmon production can be both commercially viable and environmentally sustainable.
The company is currently raising a £5 million Series A round and has applied for advance assurance for VCT and EIS relief.
